I Will Survive Trombone

Although I've tried to stay away from covers, some are too great to ignore. In 2024, the International Trombone Festival created a multi-track video of a trombone arrangement of I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor. Yes, the name of the video very much resembles click bait, but the title is appropriately awe-inspiring of what they were able to do. This project speaks to the incredible range of the trombone, as well as its unique ability among brass instruments to sound like a human voice. I also think it's awesome that so many people contributed to this project.

Now, here's a little information about Gloria Gaynor and her hit song, I Will Survive. Released in 1978, this song spent three weeks at the top of Billboard's Top 100. If you need empirical proof of its popularity, the music video on YouTube has over 121 million views! The song has so greatly impacted the pop culture of the United States, that in 2016 the original recording was selected by the Library of Congress to be preserved in the National Recording Registry. The genesis of the lyrics occurred when the songwriter had just been fired from his job, and was determined to make it in the music industry. While I Will Survive is lyrically about a breakup, contextually it was written about trying to survive the ups and downs of the music industry in the 1970s.

  1. "I Will Survive" has always been one of my favorite songs from this era. See Chris make this arrangement and finally sharing it has been really cool! Especially seeing one of our colleagues in it!
